How we calculate
Monthly salary: social insurance is deducted first (2026: 18.07%, 18.32% in Vienna because of the 0.75% housing contribution; reduced unemployment contribution up to €2,630 gross; ceiling €6,930 a month). Wage tax (Lohnsteuer) is then calculated with the annual tariff: 0% up to €13,539, then 20, 30, 40, 48, 50 and 55%. We deduct the traffic tax credit (Verkehrsabsetzbetrag, €496), the €132 expense allowance, the commuter allowance with Pendlereuro (€6 per km a year), the sole earner credit and the family bonus (€2,000.16 per child under 18).
13th and 14th salary: holiday pay (Urlaubszuschuss) and Christmas bonus (Weihnachtsgeld) are taxed at fixed rates after social insurance: the first €620 tax-free, then 6%.
Not included: the social insurance refund and the traffic credit supplement, which you only get in the annual tax assessment (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung) — the same as in the official BMF calculator. Overtime, benefits in kind and allowances are not included either.
We compared the results with the official gross–net calculator of the Austrian Ministry of Finance (BMF) in 13 cases: they match to the cent.
