How salaries are taxed in Hungary (2026)
Hungary has a flat 15% personal income tax (SZJA) and an 18.5% social security contribution (TB-járulék) paid by the employee, so without allowances the net salary is 66.5% of the gross. The employer pays a 13% social contribution tax (szociális hozzájárulási adó, szocho) on top of the gross salary.
Allowances reduce the income tax base: the family allowance (HUF 133,340 per child per month with one child, 266,660 with two, 440,000 from three — doubled in 2026), the under-25 allowance and the income tax exemptions for mothers. If the family allowance is larger than the tax base, 15% of the remainder reduces the social security contribution.
Not included: first-married couples' and personal allowances, local business tax, KIVA and part-year employment. Your payslip is authoritative.
The calculator uses the same engine as our Hungarian bérkalkulátor, tested against the examples of the Hungarian tax authority (NAV). Sources: Personal Income Tax Act (1995. évi CXVII.), Social Security Act (2019. évi CXXII.), Social Contribution Tax Act, government decree on the 2026 minimum wage.
